The 2027 liturgical calendar runs from Sunday, November 29, 2026, to Saturday, November 27, 2027. It follows Sunday Lectionary Year B and Weekday Cycle I, with Ash Wednesday on February 10 and Easter on March 28, 2027.
The liturgical calendar for 2027 contains three changes that a standard date list misses. The Solemnity of the Annunciation moves from Thursday, March 25, to Monday, April 5, 2027, because March 25 falls on Holy Thursday.
All Saints’ Day, Monday, November 1, 2027, carries no Mass obligation in the United States, because it falls on a Monday. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is omitted in 2027, because Sunday, December 12, 2027, is the Third Sunday of Advent. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) confirms all three in its 2027 calendar.

Catholic holy days of obligation 2027
Five days in calendar year 2027 carry a Mass obligation in every U.S. diocese, and a sixth, the Ascension, carries it on Thursday in five ecclesiastical provinces. Sundays are not counted. The list comes from the USCCB 2027 calendar and matches Catholic Answers’ 2027 holy days list.
| Date | Solemnity | Obligation in the U.S. |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, January 1, 2027 | Mary, the Holy Mother of God | Obligatory |
| Thursday, May 6, 2027 | Ascension of the Lord | Obligatory only in the provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Omaha and Philadelphia |
| Sunday, August 15, 2027 | Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary | Obligatory (falls on a Sunday) |
| Monday, November 1, 2027 | All Saints | Abrogated |
| Wednesday, December 8, 2027 | Immaculate Conception | Obligatory |
| Saturday, December 25, 2027 | Nativity of the Lord | Obligatory |
Why All Saints’ Day 2027 is not a holy day of obligation
The obligation is lifted because November 1, 2027, falls on a Monday. USCCB norms state that when January 1, August 15, or November 1 falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated.
The rule does not apply to the Immaculate Conception, which is the patronal feast of the United States, or to Christmas. Both remain obligatory on any weekday. The solemnity itself is still celebrated; only the obligation is removed.
Ascension Thursday or Ascension Sunday in 2027?
The Ascension falls on Thursday, May 6, 2027, in five U.S. provinces and on Sunday, May 9, 2027, everywhere else. The USCCB 2027 calendar names the provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Omaha, and Philadelphia as keeping Thursday.
The Province of Newark is not on the 2027 list. Every other U.S. province transfers the solemnity to the following Sunday, replacing the Seventh Sunday of Easter.
How to check which Ascension date applies to your parish
Use the archdiocese at the head of your ecclesiastical province, not your state, to determine the date. For example, the Province of Hartford includes the dioceses of Rhode Island, so a Providence parish keeps Thursday. Check your diocesan website or the parish bulletin for the Ascension 2027 Mass schedule.
Liturgical seasons 2027 explained
The 2027 liturgical year moves through two fixed cycles, Advent–Christmas and Lent–Easter, separated by two periods of Ordinary Time.
Advent 2026: the start of the 2027 liturgical year
Advent begins on Sunday, November 29, 2026, and lasts four Sundays, ending before the Vigil Mass of Christmas on Thursday, December 24, 2026. The four Sundays fall on November 29, December 6, December 13 (Gaudete), and December 20, 2026. The Immaculate Conception on Tuesday, December 8, 2026, is a holy day of obligation.
Christmas Time 2026–2027
Christmas Time runs from Friday, December 25, 2026, to the Baptism of the Lord on Sunday, January 10, 2027. In the United States, the Epiphany moves to the Sunday between January 2 and January 8, which in 2027 is Sunday, January 3. The universal calendar keeps Wednesday, January 6, 2027.
Ordinary Time in 2027
Ordinary Time occurs twice in 2027: from Monday, January 11, to Tuesday, February 9, and from Monday, May 17, to Saturday, November 27. The USCCB gives these two ranges for Weekday Cycle I. The season closes with the Solemnity of Christ the King on Sunday, November 21, 2027.
Lent 2027
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027, and ends before the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 25, 2027. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, March 26, are days of fasting and abstinence. Every Friday of Lent is a day of abstinence from meat under Canon 1251. The table lists the seven Lenten Fridays:
| Friday in Lent 2027 | Obligation |
|---|---|
| Friday, February 12, 2027 | Abstinence |
| Friday, February 19, 2027 | Abstinence |
| Friday, February 26, 2027 | Abstinence |
| Friday, March 5, 2027 | Abstinence |
| Friday, March 12, 2027 | Abstinence |
| Friday, March 19, 2027 | Solemnity of Saint Joseph; Canon 1251 lifts the abstinence |
| Friday, March 26, 2027 (Good Friday) | Fasting and abstinence |
Saint Joseph on a Lenten Friday in 2027
The Solemnity of Saint Joseph falls on Friday, March 19, 2027, and Canon 1251 states that Friday abstinence does not apply when a solemnity falls on a Friday.
Some bishops issue their own guidance for the day, so check your diocesan announcement. The law of abstinence binds Catholics from age 14. The law of fasting binds Catholics from age 18 until the beginning of their 60th year, under Canon 1252.
Paschal Triduum 2027
The Paschal Triduum begins with the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Thursday, March 25, 2027, and ends with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday, March 28, 2027. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, March 21, 2027.
Easter Time 2027
Easter Time lasts 50 days, from Sunday, March 28, to Pentecost Sunday, May 16, 2027. The Second Sunday of Easter, April 4, is also the Sunday of Divine Mercy. The Annunciation is celebrated on Monday, April 5, the first free day after the Easter Octave.
What changes in the 2027 liturgical calendar
Six celebrations in the 2027 calendar move, lose their obligation, or disappear because of where they fall. Each change follows a general liturgical norm rather than a one-off decision.
| Celebration | Normal date | 2027 date or status | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annunciation of the Lord | March 25 | Monday, April 5, 2027 | March 25 is Holy Thursday; a solemnity in Holy Week or the Easter Octave moves to the Monday after the Second Sunday of Easter |
| Our Lady of Guadalupe | December 12 | Omitted | Sunday, December 12, 2027, is the Third Sunday of Advent, which outranks a feast |
| All Saints obligation | November 1 | Abrogated | November 1, 2027, is a Monday |
| Epiphany of the Lord | January 6 | Sunday, January 3, 2027 (U.S.) | U.S. transfer to the Sunday between January 2 and January 8 |
| Corpus Christi | Thursday after Trinity Sunday | Sunday, May 30, 2027 (U.S.) | U.S. transfer to Sunday; the universal date is Thursday, May 27, 2027 |
| Friday abstinence | Every Friday of Lent | Lifted on Friday, March 19, 2027 | Solemnity of Saint Joseph (Canon 1251) |
The Episcopal Church also moves the Annunciation to Monday, April 5, 2027, according to the Lectionary Page 2027 Episcopal calendar.
Lectionary cycles in 2027: Year B and Weekday Cycle I
Sunday Masses in the 2027 liturgical year use Lectionary Year B, and weekday Masses in Ordinary Time use Cycle I. The USCCB dates Year B from November 29, 2026, to November 27, 2027.
Sunday Year B
Year B draws most Sunday Gospel readings from the Gospel of Mark, the shortest of the four Gospels. It supplements Mark with John 6, the Bread of Life discourse, on five summer Sundays (the 17th to 21st Sundays in Ordinary Time).
Weekday Cycle I
Weekday Cycle I applies in odd-numbered years, and Cycle II in even-numbered years. The cycle affects only the first reading and psalm on weekdays in Ordinary Time. The Gospel readings are the same in both cycles.
Liturgical calendar 2027 cycles compared with 2026 and 2028
| Liturgical year | Begins | Sunday cycle | Weekday cycle |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025–2026 | Sunday, November 30, 2025 | Year A | Cycle II |
| 2026–2027 | Sunday, November 29, 2026 | Year B | Cycle I |
| 2027–2028 | Sunday, November 28, 2027 | Year C | Cycle II |
Liturgical colors in 2027
The Roman Rite uses six vestment colors, and each marks a season or a type of celebration. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (paragraph 346) sets the colors, and the USCCB permits black at funerals and on All Souls’ Day.
| Color | Used for | 2027 example |
|---|---|---|
| Violet | Advent, Lent | Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027 |
| Rose | Gaudete and Laetare Sundays (optional) | Sunday, March 7, 2027 |
| White | Christmas, Easter, feasts of the Lord and Mary, non-martyr saints | Easter Sunday, March 28, 2027 |
| Red | Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost, apostles, martyrs | Pentecost Sunday, May 16, 2027 |
| Green | Ordinary Time | Monday, May 17, 2027, onward |
| Black | Masses for the dead (optional) | All Souls’ Day, Tuesday, November 2, 2027 |
Catholic vs. Episcopal vs. Lutheran and Methodist vs. Orthodox calendars in 2027
The Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, and Methodist calendars share Easter on March 28, 2027, and Year B readings; the Orthodox calendar keeps Pascha five weeks later, on May 2, 2027.
The table compares the key 2027 dates across traditions.

The Episcopal dates come from the Lectionary Page 2027 calendar. The Revised Common Lectionary’s Year B assignment for 2026–2027 comes from the Vanderbilt Divinity Library. The Orthodox Pascha date and the dates derived from it are covered in Orthodox Easter 2027.
Liturgical calendar dates for 2027 to 2031
Easter moves between March 22 and April 25, so every date that depends on it (Ash Wednesday, Pentecost and the start of Advent) changes year to year.
The table covers five liturgical years.
| Liturgical year | First Sunday of Advent | Sunday cycle | Ash Wednesday | Easter Sunday | Pentecost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026–2027 | Sunday, November 29, 2026 | Year B | Wednesday, February 10, 2027 | Sunday, March 28, 2027 | Sunday, May 16, 2027 |
| 2027–2028 | Sunday, November 28, 2027 | Year C | Wednesday, March 1, 2028 | Sunday, April 16, 2028 | Sunday, June 4, 2028 |
| 2028–2029 | Sunday, December 3, 2028 | Year A | Wednesday, February 14, 2029 | Sunday, April 1, 2029 | Sunday, May 20, 2029 |
| 2029–2030 | Sunday, December 2, 2029 | Year B | Wednesday, March 6, 2030 | Sunday, April 21, 2030 | Sunday, June 9, 2030 |
| 2030–2031 | Sunday, December 1, 2030 | Year C | Wednesday, February 26, 2031 | Sunday, April 13, 2031 | Sunday, June 1, 2031 |
Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. Ash Wednesday falls 46 days before Easter, and Pentecost 49 days after it.
What the liturgical calendar 2027 is not
The liturgical calendar is not the civil calendar, and several common assumptions about it are wrong.
- It does not begin on January 1. The 2027 liturgical year began on Sunday, November 29, 2026.
- It is not identical in every country. The U.S. transfers the Epiphany, Ascension (in most provinces), and Corpus Christi to Sunday; the universal calendar does not.
- It is not the Orthodox calendar. Orthodox Pascha falls on May 2, 2027, not March 28.
- It is not the 1962 Missal calendar. Parishes celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass follow a different ranking of feasts and do not use the three-year lectionary.
- A holy day of obligation is not the same as a federal holiday. None of the 2027 holy days except Christmas is a U.S. federal holiday.
Frequently asked questions
What liturgical year is 2027?
2027 is Year B in the Sunday lectionary and Cycle I in the weekday lectionary. Year B began on Sunday, November 29, 2026, and ends on Saturday, November 27, 2027. Year C begins on Sunday, November 28, 2027.
Is All Saints’ Day 2027 a holy day of obligation?
No, not in the United States. November 1, 2027, falls on a Monday, and USCCB norms abrogate the obligation when November 1 falls on a Saturday or Monday. The solemnity is still celebrated at Mass that day.
When is the Annunciation in 2027?
The Annunciation is celebrated on Monday, April 5, 2027. Its usual date, March 25, falls on Holy Thursday in 2027, so the solemnity moves to the Monday after the Second Sunday of Easter, as the USCCB 2027 calendar shows.
