Aries dates in 2027: Saturday, March 20, to Monday, April 19, Eastern Time. The Sun enters Aries at 4:25 p.m. EDT on March 20 and Taurus at 3:17 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, April 20.
Aries dates are set by the March equinox, the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. The Aries zodiac sign begins at that exact minute and ends when the Sun reaches 30 degrees of ecliptic longitude and enters Taurus.
Because the equinox moves by about six hours each year, Aries started on Tuesday, March 19, in New York in 2024 and will start on Sunday, March 19, again in 2028, while in 2027 it starts on Saturday, March 20.
Fixed ranges such as “March 21 to April 19” are wrong for most recent years. This page gives the exact 2027 start and end times in every US time zone, the dates for 2024 through 2030, and how the Western Aries differs from the Vedic sign Mesha and from the Aries constellation.

Across the continental United States, Aries 2027 begins on Saturday, March 20, and ends at the close of Monday, April 19. Monday, April 19, is the last full calendar day of Aries in every US time zone, because the Taurus ingress falls between midnight and 3:17 a.m. on April 20.
Aries 2027 dates that differ by location
Aries 2027 starts on a different calendar date in Asia and Australia. In Sydney and in India, the Sun enters Aries on Sunday, March 21, so a person born there on March 20, 2027, is a Pisces.
The Pisces Dates 2027 page covers the sign that ends at this boundary, and Taurus Dates 2027 covers the sign that follows.
Two time-of-day boundaries matter for US births in 2027:
- Saturday, March 20: a birth before 4:25 p.m. EDT (1:25 p.m. PDT) is a Pisces; a birth at or after that moment is an Aries.
- Tuesday, April 20: a birth before 3:17 a.m. EDT (12:17 a.m. PDT) is an Aries; a birth at or after that moment is a Taurus.
Daylight saving time is already in effect at both boundaries in 2027, since US clocks moved forward on Sunday, March 14, 2027.
Aries dates by year, 2024 to 2030
Aries dates shift within a two-day window, and the start date in the United States moves between March 19 and March 20. The table below lists the March equinox, which marks the start of Aries, from Timeanddate, with the New York date and weekday.
| Year | Aries begins (UTC) | Aries begins (New York) | Weekday in New York |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | March 20, 03:06 | March 19, 11:06 p.m. | Tuesday |
| 2025 | March 20, 09:01 | March 20, 5:01 a.m. | Thursday |
| 2026 | March 20, 14:46 | March 20, 10:46 a.m. | Friday |
| 2027 | March 20, 20:24 | March 20, 4:24 p.m. | Saturday |
| 2028 | March 20, 02:17 | March 19, 10:17 p.m. | Sunday |
| 2029 | March 20, 08:02 | March 20, 4:02 a.m. | Tuesday |
| 2030 | March 20, 13:51 | March 20, 9:51 a.m. | Wednesday |
The end of Aries, when the Sun enters Taurus, shifts in the same way. The table below uses the Taurus ingress times published by Cafe Astrology and the 2028 date from Augurine.
| Year | Aries ends (Sun enters Taurus, Eastern Time) | Length of Aries season |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Friday, April 19, 9:59 a.m. EDT | 30 days, 10 hours, 53 minutes |
| 2025 | Saturday, April 19, 3:56 p.m. EDT | 30 days, 10 hours, 55 minutes |
| 2026 | Sunday, April 19, 9:39 p.m. EDT | 30 days, 10 hours, 53 minutes |
| 2027 | Tuesday, April 20, 3:17 a.m. EDT | 30 days, 10 hours, 52 minutes |
| 2028 | Wednesday, April 19 (UTC date) | Exact time not yet confirmed |
Why the Aries start date moves
The Aries start date moves because a calendar year has 365 days while the solar year is about 365 days and 6 hours. Each year, the equinox arrives about 5 hours and 45 minutes later on the clock: 03:06 UTC in 2024, 09:01 in 2025, 14:46 in 2026, and 20:24 in 2027.
The leap day on February 29, 2028, pulls it back to 02:17 UTC, which is the evening of March 19 in the Americas. The length of Aries season barely changes, holding at about 30 days and 11 hours every year.
How to check whether a birthday is Aries
Use this method for a birth date of March 19, 20, or 21, or April 19 or 20:
- Find that year’s Aries start or end time in UTC in the tables above.
- Convert the birth time to UTC, accounting for daylight saving time at the birthplace.
- A birth at or after the start time and before the end time is Aries.
What is the Aries zodiac sign?
The Aries zodiac sign is the first 30 degrees of the ecliptic, measured eastward from the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator at the March equinox. Astronomers call that starting point the First Point of Aries, and it is the zero point for celestial longitude and right ascension.
Western astrology assigns Aries the attributes below.
| Attribute | Aries |
|---|---|
| Position | 1st of 12 signs; ecliptic longitude 0°–30° |
| Symbol | ♈ the ram |
| Element | Fire, shared with Leo and Sagittarius |
| Modality | Cardinal, shared with Cancer, Libra and Capricorn |
| Ruling planet | Mars |
| Exaltation | Sun |
| Detriment and fall | Venus (detriment), Saturn (fall) |
| Opposite sign | Libra |
| Sanskrit name | Meṣa |
The ram symbol comes from Chrysomallus, the flying golden ram of Greek myth that rescued the children Phrixus and Helle and whose fleece became the Golden Fleece.
In astrological tradition, Aries is associated with initiative, directness, and competitiveness. These are astrological attributions, not findings of psychological research.
Aries in Vedic astrology: Mesha
Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so its Aries, called Mesha, starts about 25 days after the Western sign. In 2027, the Sun enters sidereal Aries on Wednesday, April 14, at 6:03 a.m. EDT (3:33 p.m. IST).
The five-minute gap reflects different ayanamsa values; the ayanamsa is the offset each system uses between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs.
This moment is called Mesha Sankranti, and it marks the solar new year in several regional calendars. Vaisakhi, the harvest festival observed in Punjab and Haryana, falls on Wednesday, April 14, 2027. Sidereal Aries ends when the Sun enters Vrishabha (sidereal Taurus) on Saturday, May 15, 2027, Eastern Time.
As a result, a person born between Saturday, March 20, and Tuesday, April 13, 2027, is an Aries in Western astrology and a Pisces (Meena) in Vedic astrology.
The Aries constellation
The Aries constellation is separate from the Aries sign. It ranks 39th of the 88 constellations by area, covering 441 square degrees, according to Wikipedia’s constellation entry.
Its brightest star is Hamal (Alpha Arietis), magnitude 2.00, about 66 light-years away. The next brightest are Sheratan (Beta Arietis) and Mesarthim (Gamma Arietis). Babylonian astronomers called these stars MUL LÚ.ḪUN.GÁ, “the hired man,” before they became the ram.
The Sun passes in front of the Aries constellation from about April 18 to May 14, not in March, based on EarthSky’s table of constellation entry dates.
Precession of the equinoxes has carried the First Point of Aries out of the Aries constellation and into Pisces, and it will reach Aquarius around 2600 AD.
The March equinox, the start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, is covered in full on First Day of Spring 2027: March Equinox Date and Time.
What Aries is not
Three different things share the name Aries, and their 2027 dates do not match. The table below compares them.
| Feature | Aries zodiac sign (tropical) | Mesha (sidereal Aries) | Aries constellation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Used by | Western astrology | Vedic astrology, Hindu calendars | Astronomy |
| Defined by | March equinox | Fixed stars, with an ayanamsa | IAU constellation boundaries |
| Width | 30° | 30° | Irregular; about 26 days of the Sun’s path |
| 2027 start (Eastern Time) | Saturday, March 20 | Wednesday, April 14 | About April 18 |
| 2027 end (Eastern Time) | Monday, April 19 | Friday, May 14 | About May 14 |
Aries is also not tied to a birthstone. The US birthstone list follows calendar months, so an Aries born in March falls under March Birthstone, and one born in April falls under April Birthstone.
Nor is Aries a spring sign everywhere. The March equinox begins spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Aries dates?
The Aries dates in 2027 are Saturday, March 20, to Monday, April 19, in US Eastern Time. Aries begins at 4:25 p.m. EDT on March 20 and ends at 3:17 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, April 20. The commonly printed range of March 21 to April 19 is an approximation; the real start falls on March 19 or 20 in the United States in every year from 2024 to 2030.
Is March 20 Aries or Pisces?
March 20 can be either Aries or Pisces, depending on the year and the time of birth. In 2027, a birth in New York before 4:25 p.m. EDT on March 20 is a Pisces, and a birth at or after that time is an Aries. In Sydney and India, all of March 20, 2027, is Pisces, because Aries begins there on March 21.
Is April 20 Aries or Taurus?
April 20 is mostly Taurus in 2027. The Sun enters Taurus at 3:17 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, April 20, 2027, so only a birth before that moment is an Aries. In Pacific Time, the cutoff is 12:17 a.m. PDT. In 2024, 2025, and 2026, Taurus began on April 19 in Eastern Time, so April 20 was fully Taurus in those years.
What is the Aries symbol?
The Aries symbol is the ram, written with the glyph ♈, which is usually read as the ram’s head and horns. The image comes from Chrysomallus, the golden ram of Greek mythology whose fleece became the Golden Fleece. Aries is a fire sign with cardinal modality, and its traditional ruling planet is Mars, according to standard Western astrological references.
Why is Aries the first zodiac sign?
Aries is the first zodiac sign because the tropical zodiac starts at the March equinox, the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. That point, the First Point of Aries, is also zero degrees of celestial longitude in astronomy. When Babylonian and Greek astronomers set up the system, the March equinox lay among the stars of Aries; precession has since moved it into Pisces.
What is the Vedic Aries date in 2027?
The Vedic Aries, called Mesha, begins on Wednesday, April 14, 2027, at 3:33 p.m. IST (6:03 a.m. EDT), according to Drik Panchang. It ends when the Sun enters Vrishabha on Saturday, May 15, 2027, Eastern Time. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which in 2027 runs about 25 days behind the Western tropical zodiac.
