What the Battle of Puebla was
On May 5, 1862, a Mexican force under General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated an invading French army at Puebla.
The French had landed at Veracruz in late 1861, nominally to collect on defaulted debt, and were advancing on Mexico City.
The victory was significant but not decisive. French forces regrouped, took Puebla the following year, and installed Maximilian of Habsburg as emperor. The French occupation lasted until 1867.
