Tax Day 2027: Date, and Federal Income Tax Filing Deadline

The federal income tax filing deadline for the 2026 tax year is Thursday, April 15, 2027. There is no extension. Tax Day is not a federal holiday and closes nothing.

The reason people check this date every year is that it moves more often than it looks like it should.

April 15 shifts whenever it falls on a weekend, and it also shifts because of a District of Columbia holiday most filers have never heard of.

Neither applies in 2027, which makes it one of the straightforward years.

The two rules that move Tax Day

Under 26 U.S.C. 7503, when a filing deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day. Two separate conditions can trigger that.

The weekend rule. If April 15 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the deadline moves to the following Monday — or later, if that Monday is itself a holiday.

The Emancipation Day rule. The District of Columbia observes Emancipation Day on April 16, commemorating the 1862 abolition of slavery in the District. Because the IRS is headquartered in DC, a District legal holiday is treated as affecting the nationwide deadline. When April 16 falls on a Saturday, the observance moves back to Friday, April 15 — which makes April 15 a legal holiday and pushes Tax Day to the following Monday.

In 2027 neither fires. April 15 is a Thursday, and April 16 is a Friday, so Emancipation Day is observed on the Friday, after the deadline rather than on it.

Tax Day is not a holiday and never has been. The late-night post office queues that once marked the date have largely disappeared with electronic filing.

State deadlines are not always April 15

Most states align their individual income tax deadline with the federal date, but not all, and several states have no individual income tax at all.

This page does not list which states fall in the second row, deliberately. State deadlines are set by legislatures and revenue departments and are revised more often than the federal date, so a named list published here would go stale without any visible sign of it.

Shifted deadlines in the table are indicative. The IRS announces the operative date for each filing season, and disaster declarations routinely extend deadlines for affected counties regardless of the calendar.

What Tax Day 2027 is not

Tax Day is not a federal holiday. It appears nowhere in 5 U.S.C. 6103 and closes nothing.

It is not automatically April 15 in every year. The weekend rule and the DC Emancipation Day rule both move it, and disaster declarations move it for specific areas.

It is not the deadline for everyone. Taxpayers living abroad, members of the armed forces in combat zones, and filers in federally declared disaster areas operate on different dates.

Filing an extension is not a payment extension. An extension to Friday, October 15, 2027 moves the filing deadline only; tax owed is still due April 15, and interest accrues from that date.

Frequently asked questions

When are taxes due in 2027?

Thursday, April 15, 2027, for the 2026 tax year. No weekend or holiday shift applies in 2027. The extension deadline is Friday, October 15, 2027.

Why does Tax Day sometimes fall after April 15?

Because of two rules. If April 15 lands on a weekend, the deadline moves to the next business day. And the District of Columbia observes Emancipation Day on April 16 — when that falls on a Saturday, it is observed on Friday April 15, making April 15 a legal holiday in DC and pushing the national deadline into the following week. Neither applies in 2027.

Does an extension give me more time to pay?

No. An extension moves the filing deadline to October 15, 2027 but not the payment deadline. Tax owed is still due on April 15, and interest accrues on any unpaid balance from that date regardless of the extension.
