Why the Oscars move dates each year
The ceremony has no fixed rule. Recent dates have ranged from February 9 in 2020, moved up to reduce awards-season fatigue, to April 21 in 2021, pushed back by the pandemic.
The Academy schedules around competing broadcasts. It avoids direct conflicts with the NFL playoffs and the Olympics in particular — both of which are ABC or ESPN concerns as well as ratings ones.
The 2027 date of March 14 sits a month after Super Bowl LXI on February 14, and there are no Winter Olympics in 2027.
The 2028 ceremony moves earlier, to Sunday, March 5, marking the centenary.
