Who decides international days?
Most international days are proclaimed by the UN General Assembly through a resolution, and others are set by UN specialised agencies such as UNESCO, the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization.
In the tables, days such as World Health Day come from the World Health Organization, and days such as World Poetry Day and the International Day of Light come from UNESCO.
A country or group proposes a day, member states negotiate the text, and the resolution or agency decision fixes the date.
New days are added most years. Days added in recent years include World Meditation Day and World Basketball Day, both on December 21, and the International Day of Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence on August 31.
