Earth Day 2027 falls on Thursday, April 22, 2027. It is not a federal holiday and closes nothing.
The date is not symbolic. Senator Gaylord Nelson and his staff chose April 22 for a practical reason: it fell between spring break and final exams on most college calendars, maximising the number of students who could attend (Nelson Institute, University of Wisconsin–Madison).
Earth Day is the only major American observance whose date was set by the academic calendar.

How Earth Day started
Gaylord Nelson had spent years trying to get environmental issues onto the Senate agenda without success.
Watching the anti-war teach-ins on college campuses, he wondered what would happen if hundreds of colleges held environmental teach-ins simultaneously.
He floated the idea in a speech in Seattle on September 9, 1969, and again six days later in Atlantic City. On November 11, 1969, Nelson and his staff announced April 22, 1970 as the date.
The first Earth Day was larger than anyone expected. Around 20 million Americans took part, across 2,000 college campuses, 10,000 primary and secondary schools, and hundreds of communities (United States Senate, Art and History).
Forty-two states passed environmental legislation to mark the occasion.
What followed was more consequential than the day itself. The Environmental Protection Agency was created later in 1970, and Congress passed the bulk of modern American environmental regulation across the decade — the Clean Air Act amendments, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act.
Nelson sponsored several of them and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995.

Nothing closes for Earth Day anywhere in the United States. It is an observance, not a holiday, and it has never been proposed as a federal holiday in any serious legislative form.
Earth Day and Earth Week
Later in 1970, Nelson drafted a resolution designating the third week of April as Earth Week, and half the Senate signed on as co-sponsors.
| Observance | 2027 dates |
|---|---|
| Earth Week | Approximately April 18 to 24 |
| Earth Day | Thursday, April 22 |
| Arbor Day, national | Friday, April 30 |
Arbor Day is a separate observance and is frequently confused with Earth Day. The national date is the last Friday in April — Friday, April 30 in 2027 — but many states set their own to match local planting seasons, so Arbor Day in Hawaii and Arbor Day in Vermont fall months apart.
Earth Day dates 2025 to 2032
| Year | April 22 falls on |
|---|---|
| 2025 | Tuesday |
| 2026 | Wednesday |
| 2027 | Thursday |
| 2028 | Saturday |
| 2029 | Sunday |
| 2030 | Monday |
| 2031 | Tuesday |
| 2032 | Thursday |
A fixed-date observance advances one weekday per year and two across a leap year, which is why 2027 to 2028 skips Friday.
What Earth Day 2027 is not
Earth Day is not a federal holiday. It appears nowhere in 5 U.S.C. 6103 and confers no closure or holiday pay.
It is not Arbor Day, which falls on the last Friday in April nationally — April 30 in 2027 — and on different dates in different states.
It is not World Environment Day, which is a United Nations observance held on June 5.
It was not created by the United Nations. Earth Day originated as an American grassroots teach-in in 1970 and went international in 1990.
The UN separately observes International Mother Earth Day on the same date, designated in 2009, which is a different designation on a shared date.
Frequently asked questions
What day is Earth Day 2027?
Thursday, April 22, 2027. Earth Day is fixed to April 22 in every year and never moves. It is not a federal holiday and nothing closes for it.
Why is Earth Day on April 22?
Because it fell between spring break and final exams on most college calendars. Gaylord Nelson’s staff chose the date in 1969 to maximise student attendance at what was originally billed as a national environmental teach-in. It is the only major American observance whose date was set by the academic calendar rather than by an anniversary.
Is Earth Day a federal holiday?
No. Federal offices, banks, the postal service and the stock exchanges all operate normally on April 22. Earth Day has never held federal holiday status and no serious legislative effort has sought it.
