Mother’s Day 2027: Date, Events, and Celebrations

Mother’s Day 2027 falls on Sunday, May 9, 2027. It is not a federal holiday, so no offices, banks or schools close for it.

May 9, 2027 carries a coincidence worth knowing. President Woodrow Wilson issued Proclamation 1268, establishing the second Sunday in May as the national Mother’s Day, on May 9, 1914.

The 2027 observance therefore falls on the exact calendar anniversary of the proclamation that created it — the first time the two have aligned since 2021.

When is Mother’s Day 2027?

Sunday, May 9, 2027. The date is set by rule, not fixed, so it moves within a seven-day window.

How Mother’s Day became a national observance

Anna Jarvis organised the first Mother’s Day service at a church in Grafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908, and campaigned for national recognition from 1907 onward.

Representative James Heflin of Alabama introduced the resolution in 1914; it passed both chambers and became law on May 8, 1914 (U.S. House of Representatives, History, Art and Archives).

Wilson issued the proclamation the following day, making Sunday, May 10, 1914 the first national Mother’s Day.

The proclamation asked for one thing specifically: that the flag be displayed on government buildings and at private homes on the second Sunday in May, as a public expression of love and reverence for the country’s mothers.

It created no closure and no day off, which is why Mother’s Day has never been a federal holiday.

Jarvis herself came to oppose what the day became. She spent much of her later life and her personal fortune campaigning against its commercialisation, and was arrested in 1948 protesting at a Mother’s Day event.

The distinction matters if you are planning around it: Monday, May 10, 2027 is an ordinary working day with no holiday effect whatsoever.

Mother’s Day is consistently the busiest day of the year for U.S. restaurants and the peak sales period for cut flowers.

Reservations at popular restaurants are typically booked three to four weeks ahead.

Mother’s Day around the world

The United States date is not the international one. Most countries observing a Mother’s Day set it independently.

CountryDate 2027Rule
United States, Canada, AustraliaSunday, May 9Second Sunday in May
United Kingdom, IrelandSunday, March 7Mothering Sunday, fourth Sunday of Lent
MexicoMonday, May 10Fixed date, May 10
FranceSunday, May 30Last Sunday in May, unless Pentecost
NorwaySunday, February 14Second Sunday in February
ThailandThursday, August 12Queen Sirikit’s birthday

The United Kingdom’s Mothering Sunday is not an import of the American holiday.

It is a much older Christian observance tied to Lent, which is why it falls in March in 2027 — the fourth Sunday of Lent, two months before the American date.

Mother’s Day events

Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 9, 2027 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and many other countries (while the UK celebrates Mothering Sunday on March 7, 2027).

Across major cities and communities, the most popular public and ticketed events consistently revolve around a few core categories:

1. Iconic Dining & Scenic Cruises

Mother’s Day remains the busiest dining day of the entire calendar year, making structured culinary events the top draw:

  • Mother’s Day Brunch & Dinner Cruises: Sightseeing yacht cruises (such as City Cruises in ports like NYC, Chicago, San Diego, and Boston) featuring bottomless mimosa brunches, live jazz or acoustic bands, and skyline viewing decks.
  • Botanical & Historic Estate Brunches: Large public gardens, arboretums, and historic estates host tented garden brunches and floral afternoon teas that sell out weeks in advance.
  • Winery & Vineyard Picnics: Wine-region day trips (e.g., Napa/Sonoma, Willamette Valley, Texas Hill Country) hosting curated lawn tastings, charcuterie pairings, and live patio music.

2. Spring Floral Festivals & Garden Strolls

Early-to-mid May aligns with peak spring blooms across North America and Europe:

  • Botanical Garden Spring Displays: Major garden exhibitions (such as the New York Botanical Garden, Atlanta Botanical Garden, or Kew Gardens) featuring specialized guided walks, floral photography tours, and outdoor chamber music.
  • Tulip & Lavender Festivals: Annual flower festivals in full swing, offering “U-pick” bouquet cutting fields and outdoor artisan markets.

3. Creative & Experiential Workshops

Experiential outings that double as a keepsake take priority over traditional gifts:

  • “Sip & Plant” / Flower Arranging Masterclasses: Florist-led workshops where mothers and their families design custom floral centerpieces or terrariums while enjoying wine or tea.
  • Private Pottery & Sip-and-Paint Sessions: Drop-in wheel-throwing sessions or guided painting classes themed around spring landscapes.
  • Artisanal Cooking Classes: Hands-on pasta-making, French pastry baking, or sushi-rolling classes designed for pairs or family groups.

4. Wellness & Active Community Events

  • Mother’s Day 5K / Fun Runs: Charity races and fun walks organized nationwide (often benefiting women’s health or breast cancer foundations), typically featuring complimentary post-race carnations, mimosas, and family photo booths.
  • Outdoor Yoga & Sound Baths: Morning rooftop or park yoga sessions paired with sound meditation and fresh juice bars.
  • Full-Day Spa Retreats:Day resorts offering specialized mother-daughter or family wellness packages featuring hydrotherapy circuits and massages.

5. Live Performances & Pop-Up Markets

  • Spring Artisan & Makers Markets: Outdoor craft fairs featuring local jewelry, ceramics, gourmet foods, and boutique gifts.
  • Mother’s Day Pops & Symphony Matinees: Afternoon classical or film-score concerts held by local symphonies, often concluding with complimentary champagne toasts in the lobby.

Palm Beach, Florida, ranked as the #1 US Mother’s Day destination in 2026, according to a SIXT study that gave it a score of 92.5.

The study’s top 10 also includes Napa Valley, Scottsdale, Sedona, Santa Fe, Newport, Miami, Asheville, Savannah, and Charleston.

SIXT built the ranking on relaxation signals rather than bookings. Palm Beach, for example, scored on an average noise level of 42 decibels and 312.4 spas per 100,000 residents.

SIXT also reported that searches for “Mother’s Day ideas” rose 179% in the month before Mother’s Day 2026.

Why Mother’s Day Travel Demand Is Growing

Special outings are the second-largest Mother’s Day spending category in the US.

The National Retail Federation’s 2026 survey projects $6.4 billion on special outings, behind only jewelry at $7.5 billion, within a record $38 billion in total Mother’s Day spending.

The same survey found that a record one-third of consumers plan to give experiences as gifts.

International Options for US Travelers

The Amalfi Coast (Italy) and the Cotswolds (England) are the most common international picks for a Mother’s Day trip in May.

Neither place celebrates Mother’s Day on that date. Italy observes it on the same second Sunday in May, but the UK celebrates Mothering Sunday in March.

What Mother’s Day 2027 is not

Mother’s Day is not a federal holiday. It is not listed in 5 U.S.C. 6103 and confers no closure, no holiday pay and no day off. Federal employees who work a Sunday schedule work normally.

It is not on a fixed date. May 9 in 2027 is a coincidence of the second-Sunday rule, not a permanent date.

It is not the same day worldwide. If you are sending something to the United Kingdom or Ireland, Mothering Sunday 2027 falls on March 7, two months earlier.

It is not Mothering Sunday. The two have separate origins — one American and secular, dating to 1908; the other British and Christian, tied to the Lenten calendar and considerably older.

Frequently asked questions

What day is Mother’s Day 2027?

Sunday, May 9, 2027. Mother’s Day always falls on the second Sunday in May in the United States, giving it a possible range of May 8 to May 14.

Is Mother’s Day a federal holiday?

No. Mother’s Day has never been a federal holiday and does not appear in 5 U.S.C. 6103. The 1914 resolution that established it requested only that the flag be displayed; it created no closure. Because the day always falls on a Sunday, most offices are closed anyway.

Is Mother’s Day the same date in the UK?

No. UK Mothering Sunday 2027 falls on Sunday, March 7, two months before the American date. It is fixed to the fourth Sunday of Lent rather than to a May rule, so it moves with Easter — which falls early in 2027, on March 28.
