Islamic Calendar 2027: Hijri Months and Muslim Holidays (1448–1449 AH)

The Islamic calendar 2027 spans two Hijri years: 1448 AH until Saturday, June 5, 2027, and 1449 AH from Sunday, June 6, 2027. Ramadan begins Monday, February 8, and Eid al-Adha falls on Sunday, May 16, 2027.

Isra and Mi’raj fall twice in 2027: on Tuesday, January 5 (27 Rajab 1448), and again on Saturday, December 25 (27 Rajab 1449), the same day as Christmas. This happens because the lunar Hijri year is 10 or 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so one Islamic date can occur twice within a single Gregorian year.

The Islamic calendar 2027 also marks the change of Hijri year. 1448 AH ends after 355 days, and 1449 AH begins on Sunday, June 6, 2027. The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) and Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura calendar agree on every month’s start in 2027.

This page covers the lunar Hijri calendar used for Muslim religious observance. It does not cover the Solar Hijri calendar used as the civil calendar in Iran and Afghanistan, which begins at Nowruz and counts different years.

Islamic calendar 2027 month by month

Fifteen Hijri months overlap with 2027, from Rajab 1448 (already running on January 1) to Sha’ban 1449 (running on December 31). Each month begins at sunset on the evening before the date shown. The FCNA and Umm al-Qura calendars give the same dates.

Muslim holidays 2027

The Islamic calendar 2027 contains 11 widely observed Muslim holidays and holy nights, from Isra and Mi’raj on January 5 to its second occurrence on December 25. Night observances begin at sunset on the evening before the listed date.

Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 2027

Ramadan runs from Monday, February 8, to Monday, March 8, 2027, and Eid al-Fitr falls on Tuesday, March 9, 2027. Mosques that require a local North American moon sighting may complete 30 days and celebrate Eid on Wednesday, March 10. Daily sehri and iftar times for five U.S. cities are in the Ramadan Calendar 2027.

Hajj, Day of Arafah and Eid al-Adha 2027

Eid al-Adha 2027 falls on Sunday, May 16, 2027, the day after the Day of Arafah on Saturday, May 15. The Hajj rites begin on Friday, May 14 (8 Dhu al-Hijjah). The three Days of Tashriq follow Eid and end on Wednesday, May 19, 2027.

FCNA states that it follows the Day of Arafah as determined by the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia, so the final Eid al-Adha date depends on the Saudi announcement at the start of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Islamic New Year 1449 and Ashura

The Islamic New Year 1449 AH begins on Sunday, June 6, 2027, and Ashura (10 Muharram) falls on Tuesday, June 15, 2027. Many Sunni Muslims fast on Ashura together with the day before it, Monday, June 14, 2027 (Tasu’a).

Shia Muslims observe Ashura as the anniversary of the death of Husayn ibn Ali at Karbala in 680 CE, with mourning gatherings rather than celebration.

Mawlid al-Nabi 2027

Mawlid al-Nabi 2027 falls on Saturday, August 14 (12 Rabi’ al-Awwal) in most Sunni communities, and on Thursday, August 19 (17 Rabi’ al-Awwal) in many Shia communities. The two dates reflect different historical reports of the Prophet Muhammad’s birth date. Some Muslims, particularly those following Salafi teachings, do not observe the Mawlid.

Isra and Mi’raj: twice in 2027

Isra and Mi’raj fall on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, and again on Saturday, December 25, 2027. The observance commemorates the Prophet Muhammad’s night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascension to heaven.

Why Isra and Mi’raj fall twice in the Islamic calendar in 2027

A Hijri year lasts 354 or 355 days, 10 or 11 days fewer than a Gregorian year. When a Hijri date falls in the first 10 days of January, the same date returns before December 31 of that year. 27 Rajab 1448 falls on January 5, 2027, so 27 Rajab 1449 arrives 354 days later, on December 25, 2027.

How dates are set in the Islamic calendar 2027

Three methods set Islamic calendar dates in the United States, and in 2027 the two calculated methods agree on every month. The difference appears only where a community requires a physical sighting of the crescent moon.

MethodHow the month startsUsed by2027 result

The FCNA criterion is quoted from the FCNA calendar page. FCNA follows unified horizons (ittihad al-matali’), which means a crescent calculable anywhere on Earth starts the month in North America.

What is today’s date in the Islamic calendar?

Monday, September 21, 2026, is 10 Rabi’ al-Thani 1448 AH. Rabi’ al-Thani 1448 began on Saturday, September 12, 2026, according to FCNA. To find any Hijri date in 2027, follow these steps:

  1. Find the Hijri month whose first day falls on or before your date in the month-by-month table.
  2. Count the days from that first day to your date, including the first day. The count is the Hijri day number.
  3. After sunset, add one day. The Islamic day begins at Maghrib, not at midnight.

For example, Friday, July 16, 2027, falls 12 days after Safar 1449 began on Monday, July 5, so it is 12 Safar 1449 during daylight and 13 Safar 1449 after sunset.

Islamic calendar vs. Gregorian calendar

The Islamic calendar is purely lunar, with 12 months of 29 or 30 days, while the Gregorian calendar is solar, with months of 28 to 31 days. The table compares the two systems.

School and work closures for Muslim holidays in 2027

No Muslim holiday is a U.S. federal holiday, but some public school systems close on the Eids. New York City Public Schools, the largest U.S. district, closes for both Eids in the 2026–27 school year, according to the NYCPS 2026–27 calendar.

Holiday2027 dateNYC Public Schools
Eid al-FitrTuesday, March 9, 2027Closed Tuesday, March 9, 2027
Eid al-AdhaSunday, May 16, 2027Closed Monday, May 17, 2027

Because Eid al-Adha falls on a Sunday in 2027, NYC schools close on the following Monday instead. Closure policies differ by district, so check your district’s board-approved calendar.

Employers are required to consider religious accommodation requests under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but no law requires a paid day off.

Islamic holidays 2027 to 2031

Every major Islamic holiday moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. The table gives Umm al-Qura dates for five years. Dates after 2027 are projections and may shift by one day in North America.

What the Islamic calendar 2027 is not

The Hijri calendar is often confused with other calendars and conventions. The points below separate them.

  • It is not the Solar Hijri calendar. Iran and Afghanistan use a solar calendar that also counts from the Hijra but begins each year at Nowruz and numbers years differently.
  • It does not add leap months. Unlike the Hebrew calendar, which adds a 13th month in 7 of every 19 years, the Hijri calendar never realigns with the seasons.
  • It is not identical in every country. Turkey, Morocco, and Pakistan, for example, publish their own dates, which can differ from Saudi Arabia’s by one day.
  • The Gregorian dates for night observances are not the nights themselves. Laylat al-Qadr “on March 6” begins at sunset on Friday, March 5, 2027.
