The seven principles are the Nguzo Saba, Swahili for “seven principles” (National Museum of African American History and Culture).
One candle is lit on the kinara each evening and the day’s principle is discussed, beginning with the black centre candle on the first night (HISTORY).
The Karamu feast falls on a federal holiday in 2027
The Karamu, the communal feast, is held on December 31 (Old Farmer’s Almanac; NMAAHC).
In 2027 that Friday is also a federal closure — the observed date for New Year’s Day 2028, which falls on a Saturday.
Federal offices, banks and the markets are shut on Friday, December 31, 2027, which is a convenience for anyone hosting rather than a coincidence with any meaning attached.
A note on a source discrepancy: one almanac page states in one place that the Karamu falls on December 31 and in another that it is “the closing Karamu feast on January 1.”
December 31 is the date given by the Smithsonian and by every other source consulted, and is the one used here.

Nothing closes for Kwanzaa itself, in 2027 or any year. Every closure in that window belongs to Christmas or New Year’s Day.
One divergence worth knowing: federal offices and banks close on Friday, December 31, but the stock market does not. NYSE Rule 7.2 keeps the exchange open when the Friday before a Saturday holiday ends a monthly or yearly accounting period (NYSE).
Where Kwanzaa came from
Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, then a professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach (NMAAHC; HISTORY).
He developed it in the aftermath of the Watts rebellion in Los Angeles, founding the cultural organisation US and researching African first-fruits harvest celebrations.
He drew on several, including Ashanti and Zulu traditions, to build the week-long observance (HISTORY). The first observance was held on December 26, 1966.
The name comes from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning “first fruits” (NMAAHC). The extra “a” distinguishes the holiday name from the Swahili word.
The first Kwanzaa United States postage stamp was issued on October 22, 1997, featuring artwork by Synthia Saint James (Old Farmer’s Almanac).

Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday. It is a cultural observance, practised by people of all faiths, and many families observe it alongside Christmas or Hanukkah rather than instead of either (NMAAHC; Old Farmer’s Almanac).
It is not a substitute for Christmas and should not be described as a “Black Christmas.” The two coexist in most households that observe both.
